Misc. A pathway through the violence of the 20th century in the Province of Trieste, IRSML Trieste 2006 The Regional institute for the history of the liberation movement of Friuli Venezia Giulia (http://www.irsml.it), published, in Italian and Slovenian, this contribution to the knowledge of memories present in the city of Trieste and the territory of Giulia, with the intent of favouring the acknowledgement and mutual respect between those that recognise themselves in them. For some years now, also following the institution of the day of remembrance on the 10th of February, many schools schedule study visits to Trieste, often visiting the San Sabba rice-fields and the Basowitza Foiba. However, it isn’t always easy to set the events linked to these two symbolical sites into context, in fact teachers and students are often dismayed in the meanders of memories on the eastern frontier. In order to make things - clearer and help teachers in their work, the Regional institute for the history of the liberation movement in Friuli Venezia Giulia, together with the administration of the Province of Trieste, has prepared a pamphlet titled “A pathway through the violence of the 20th century in the Province of Trieste”, that offers a synthetic guide to the most significant sites of memories, that is: - the offices of the Il Piccolo newspaper (burnt down in May 1915 by the supporters of Austria, with reference to the violence of those days) - The Narodny Dom (headquarters of the Slovenian and Croatian organisations, burnt down by fascists in July 1920) - The monument to those shot in Basowitza (4 young Slovenian representatives of TIGR shot in September 1930 following a sentence by the Special Tribunal) - The synagogue (devastated by fascists in July 1942) - Via Ghega (where, from the windows of Rittmeyer palace 51 hostages hung by the nazis were exposed in April 1944, with reference to the dead in Prosecco and via Massimo D’Azeglio) - The San Sabba rice-fields (the mass extermination nazi camp) - Caresana and Malchina (villages of the Carso burnt down by the nazis) - The Foiba of Basowitza (also with reference to the Plutone Foiba) – via Imbriani (where, on the 5th May 1945 a pro-Italian demonstration was drowned in blood) - The Padriciano refugee camp (with reference also to other refugee camps) - Sant’Antonio square (where at the beginning of November 1953, the GMA civil police shot against Italian demonstrators killing two, also with reference to other bloody incidents the following day in Unità d’Italia square For every site there is a profile card, a map and some images. The pamphlet is completed by a general orientation map, some maps that illustrate the evolution of the eastern frontier during the 20th century, and a brief bibliography. Copies of the pamphlet will be sent to all the Institutes of the network, and to other addresses you will kindly provide. From now, in any case, the complete text – the rights of which belong to Irsml Fvg – including the maps, is available on the sites of Irsml Fvg and Insmli, and can be freely downloaded, in part or complete, by any user. We ask you to kindly advertise the initiative as much as possible among schools, cutltural associations and local administrations you are in contact with, so that they will be able to use them in their activities.
