Charter
Art. 1 The School for the Advanced Study of Contemporary History (hereafter called "the School") is established at the seat of the National Institute for the History of the Liberation Movement in Italy (hereafter called "National Institute").
The seat of the School is at the seat of the National Institute in Milan.
Art. 2 The School operates in the field of historical science with particular emphasis on contemporary history and with international connections to the social science disciplines, consistent with the aims defined in the Charter of the National Institute regarding historiographical research and research into the communication and teaching of history.
Art. 3 The school endeavors to train young scholars, university graduates and PhDs, supporting their activity with research grants and with contributions on the basis of projects approved by the governing organs of the School. To that end, the School organizes courses and workshops at the seat of the National Institute itself and in other locations such as universities or in associated Institutes and other Institutes related to it by accord. It promotes initiatives which favor the circulation of scientific and methodological knowledge on a national and international level.
A tutor is assigned to follow the activities of each scholar.
Art. 4 PhD programs and university institutions active in historical research can become affiliated with the School, according to procedures to be approved, upon nomination by the Executive Committee of the School or by the Scientific Committee or Board of Directors of the National Institute.
Art. 5 To fulfill its operating requirements, the School can hire technical and administrative staff, and can make use of staff provided, on a full- or part-time basis, by public and private bodies.
Art. 6 Administrative management of the School is entrusted to the Administrative and Accounting Office of the National Institute.
Resources used by the School can be provided by private or public local, national, or international bodies.
Art. 7 The School makes use of equipment, spaces, and assets made available to it by the National Institute or by associated and related entities. It also makes use of the archival, bibliographic, and computer resources of the National Institute and of the institutions that affiliate with the School.
Art. 8 The Executive Committee and the Director of the School are organs of the School. The Executive Committee consists of the Director of the School, three representatives of the Scientific Committee of the Institute recommended by that same Committee, and one member recommended by the Board of Directors. The Director of the School is the director of the Scientific Committee of the National Institute. The members of the Executive Committee remain in office for three years and can serve for multiple three-year periods.
Art. 9 The Executive Committee meets at least twice per year and is convened by the Director with a letter of convocation that includes the agenda for the day.
Meetings are valid if a majority of members are present. Decisions are made by majority vote of those present. In case of a tie, the Director will cast the deciding vote. The Executive Committee appoints a Secretary, who may be chosen from outside the Committee itself, to take minutes and to help the Director oversee the activity of the Committee.
Art. 10 The Executive Committee:
a) debates and approves the School's research programs;
b) promotes initiatives of scientific exchange and the organization of courses and workshops;
c) appoints examining boards;
d) decides on the distribution of grants and contributions and the assignment of tutors to young researchers;
e) approves the publication of scientific work in the magazine and in other publications of the Institute and can promote the financing of the same;
f) participates with other organs of the Institute to stipulate accords with other cultural entities.
Art. 11 The Director:
a) coordinates and supervises the activity of the School;
b) looks after the fulfillment of programs approved by the Executive Committee;
c) prepares the spending plan and annual reports;
d) maintains relations with public and private cultural entities that interact with the School.
The Director has the right to receive an allowance, the amount of which is determined by the Board of Directors of the National Institute.
Art. 12 The Executive Committee prepares the operating Regulations of the School which must be approved by the Board of Directors of the National Institute.
Art. 13 The School can be dissolved by a decision of the Board of Directors of the National Institute, after having consulted the Director and the Executive Committee.
Art. 14 The present charter can be modified by the Board of Directors upon proposal of the Director and the Executive Committee.
Art. 15 When this Charter first goes into effect, the Director assumes the function of the Executive Committee until such committee is formed.
